Killer (and super easy, but shhhh) Cheesecake recipe below…
What would you have done?
It was my friend’s birthday, let’s call her Consuella, and I sent her a text with a birthday greeting and to ask her how she was celebrating. Well, her plans were canceled and since she had recently lost the love of her life and was just going to ‘get through the day’.
The Hub and I were to be having supper with another couple, let’s call them Tim & Kim, and you know how when you ask if you can ‘bring something’ for dinner, well I asked if I could bring… a friend (and a cheesecake!).
I framed the request with lots of room for Kim, to say ‘no’ if it wouldn’t work, but she replied in an instant with ‘Absolutely!’ and a ❤️!
So then I called Consuella back, I knew I would have to do some smooth talking to convince her to come to a stranger’s house on her birthday. But I explained everything and how I just knew this would be a wonderful fit and I asked her to think about it and call me back. Fortunately, she accepted the invitation.
But wait – if you think I was being a bad guest, check it out… there’s more!
We picked up Consuella at 4:45 to be at Tim & Kim’s for 5. She brought 2 bottles of wine and chocolates and peanut brittle, she was a great guest! Kim met us at the door and said, ‘Oh, you’re a little early!’
OMG – a little early… we were 90 minutes early!!! WTH?? How did this happen? Well, I had mixed up this invitation with the one for the next night – we were actually supposed to be at Tim & Kim’s at 6:30. Shoot me now! I showed up with a guest, 90 minutes early! For the love of Pete and the wee donkey (my new favourite expression #LongStory)!
“We’ll go for a walk!” I said, mortified.
But Tim & Kim, were a class act, they invited us in, got us drinks, put us in the rec room to entertain ourselves while they showered, et al. The Hub, Consuella and I had a lovely visit and 75 minutes later the party began!
As I suspected, everyone got along great and we had a super night. Tim & Kim, and Consuella will be kayaking together soon, new friends were found that night.
What would you have done?
– if you were Consuella, would you have accepted the invitation?
– if you were Tim & Kim, would you have said ‘yes’ to the stranger coming for dinner?
– if your guests showed up 90 minutes early, how would you have handled that?
– if you were me and you thought your friend needed a ‘birthday intervention’, what would you have done?
– if you were me and you arrived 90 minutes early, would you have beat yourself up, gone for a walk or …?
Classiness, bravery, kindness, openness, forgiveness – so many qualities and characteristics were brought to light that evening.
And one more, gratitude, gratitude for my wonderful friends.
Every situation is an opportunity to grow… if you want it to be. What’s your opportunity today?
Side-note – The cheesecake was fab (recipe below) and, yes, everyone was double vaxxed!
Love, light and cake, Steph 🎂
