Barbara Teicher, author of It’s HOW you say it, shared with us some great communication ideas on our Your Life, Unlimited radio show today.
She shares her guest post here:
BE the Difference
Have you ever felt like you’ve attended a workshop because you needed to be “fixed?” If so, you’re going to the wrong workshops. Instead of telling you what needs to be fixed, I’m telling you that you already have what it takes inside you. All you need to do is refine it a little, and recognize it to use it more effectively.
How many times have we been told we “can’t” do something? As my daughter once said, “What if Helen Keller would’ve believed it when someone told her that she was just another disabled person and she couldn’t do the things “normal” people do? What if Martin Luther King, Jr. thought one person couldn’t make a difference. Or Einstein!
One person can change the world. How? When you went to school, didn’t you feel you could make a difference in engineering, or teaching, or whatever area it was you were passionate about? ALL of us have traits that would allow us to help change the world.
As you were growing up, who were your heroes, (or “she”roes!)? If you were to write a list of the words that describe that person that made a difference in your life, an impact that you still can remember today, what words would be on that list? If I were to ask the people you work or live with to write a list of the words that describe you, would the words be the same? If not, why not?
I don’t have the traits, skills and talents that you do. I would probably never want to take on the projects that you do and you may not want to speak in front of 5,000 people. Regardless of what we do, we make a difference every day… sometimes positively and sometimes negatively.
We don’t feel we can make a true impact, a true difference, so we defer – to the government to make a difference, to our corporations to make a difference, to our neighbours. YOU are the difference maker, one small difference at a time…
BE the Difference!
